How to Rent a Dumpster for Your Next Project

If you've never rented a dumpster, the process sounds more complicated than it is. There's no contract to decode, no equipment to operate, and you don't even need to be home. Here's the whole thing, start to finish.

Step 1: Figure out what you're throwing away

Before you call, take two minutes to think through the pile. Is it a garage's worth of stuff, or a kitchen's worth of cabinets and drywall, or a whole house? Rough is fine — we're just trying to land in the right size range. It also helps to know if anything unusual is going in, like a mattress (one included, $30 each after) or an appliance.

Step 2: Call and get sized and quoted

This is where most of the work happens, and it takes about five minutes. You describe the project and your address; we tell you which size fits, what it costs all-in, and when we can get it there. No forms, no waiting for an emailed quote.

Ask about anything you're unsure of on this call — a weird item, a tight driveway, a deadline. It's much easier to solve on the phone than on delivery day.

Step 3: Prep the drop spot

Pick where you want it and clear the area: move cars, trailers, and toys, and check for low branches or wires overhead. If you're loading through the rear door, leave about 8 feet behind the container for it to swing open. Want to protect the driveway surface? Ask for plywood under the rails.

A photo of the spot texted to us removes all ambiguity — that's the single best thing a first-timer can do.

First time renting? Perfectly normal.

About half our residential customers have never done this before. Call and we'll walk you through it in plain English.

Step 4: Delivery day

Our driver places the container exactly where you asked. You don't need to be home — plenty of customers are at work when it lands. Same-day delivery is often possible if you call early enough in the day, and it's a straightforward conversation: we check the routes and tell you honestly whether today works.

Step 5: Load it (the smart way)

You've got 7 days included, so there's no rush. A few things that make a real difference:

  • Heavy items first, spread across the floor of the container rather than piled in one corner.
  • Break things down. Disassembled furniture and flattened boxes can nearly double what fits.
  • Fill the gaps with smaller debris as you go.
  • Stay below the rim. We can't legally haul a load with debris above the walls, so keep it level.

Keep the restricted list in mind while you load: no dirt, rock, concrete, shingles, or tires, and nothing hazardous — chemicals, liquids, oils, batteries, electronics, or freon appliances.

Step 6: Pickup

Call when you're done and we'll come get it — finishing early doesn't cost you anything, and it gets your driveway back. Need more time instead? Extensions are $15 a day or $75 a week; just let us know before your 7 days are up. Filled it before the project's finished? We'll swap the full container for an empty one, usually same or next day.

After the haul, disposal is handled — the landfill fees were already in your flat rate.

The whole process

  • Call, describe the project, get sized and quoted in ~5 minutes
  • Clear the drop spot (and text a photo if you can)
  • We deliver — you don't need to be home
  • Load over 7 days, keeping debris below the rim
  • Call when done; we haul it and cover the landfill fees

Do you need a permit?

Not for your own driveway or private property, which is where nearly every residential rental goes. Street placement is a different situation and usually requires a permit from your city — call us first and we'll talk through whether there's a better option.

Ready when you are: check sizes and pricing or see whether you're in our delivery area.
